Multiagent Reasoning with Belief Contexts II: Elaboration Tolerance
نویسندگان
چکیده
As discussed in previous papers, belie] conte.~a are a powerful ud appropriate formalism for the representation and implementation of propositional attitudes in a multiagent environment, In this paper we show that a formalization using belief contexts is also elaboration tolerant. That is, it is able to cope with minor changes to input problems without major revisions. Elaboration tolerance is a vital property for building situated agents: it allows for adapting and re-uling a previous problem representation in different (but related) situations, rather than building a new representation from scratch. We substantiate our claims by discussing a number of variations to a paradigmatic case study, the Three Wise Men problem.

Elaboration Tolerance
A formalism is elaboration tolerant to the extent that it is convenient to modify a set of facts expressed in the formalism to take into account new phenomena or changed circumstances. Representations of information in natural language have good elaboration tolerance when used with human background knowledge. Human-level AI will require representations with much more elaboration tolerance than ...
متن کاملDefault Reasoning with Contexts
We describe a system that combines default reasoning with contexts. Contexts are arranged in a hierarchy where more specific contexts represent revisions of the state of belief in more general contexts. We describe our algorithm for default reasoning in a context hierarchy and provide a translation of our representation into a default logic theory whose inferences agree with our algorithm. We c...
متن کاملLocal Models Semantics, or Contextual Reasoning = Locality + Compatibility
In this paper we present a new semantics, called Local Models Semantics, and use it to provide a foundation to reasoning with contexts. This semantics captures and makes precise the two main intuitions underlying contextual reasoning: (i) reasoning is mainly local and uses only part of what is potentially available (e.g., what is known, the available inference procedures), this part is what we ...
متن کاملAnalysis of mental attributes for the conflict resolution in multiagent systems
This study addresses the problem of constructing an adequate strategy for conflict resolution in the situations with high uncertainty and inconsistent goals. We develop the formal representation for such concepts as informing, deceiving, explaining, offending, forgiving, pretending, reputation etc. to model the various four, as of multiagent conflict behavior. These concepts are defined in the ...
متن کاملEpistemic Profiles and Belief Structures
The paper is devoted to a novel formalization of beliefs in multiagent systems. Our aim is to bridge the gap between idealized logical approaches to modeling beliefs and their actual implementations. Therefore the stages of belief acquisition, intermediate reasoning and final belief formation are isolated and analyzed. We give a novel semantics reflecting those stages and suitable for building ...
